The intensive selection of animals in last few decades provoked a great increase in dairy cow milk production. Contemporanely with this increase the incidence of production diseases also increased and results in lower economic and overall efficiency of milk production. Most often dairy cows fall ill in the period immediately before and after calving and because of that, these diseases were named periparturient production diseases. The diseases which frequntly appear in intensive dairy herds are milk fever, mastitis, displacement of abomasum, retained placenta, metritis and ketosis. Cows that fall ill with one of periparturient diseased are more prone to be infected by pathogens and have more frequent reproduction and leg problems. Furthermore, these cows also have lower milk production and are more culled earlier. In the paper only one periparturient disease, ketosis, is described along with its most characteristic etologic signs. In addition, the differences between different types of ketosis and measures needed for the prevention of ketosis appearance in dairy herds are also given.
