Ethology investigates species-typical behaviour. Specific behaviour is one of the indicators of animal welfare. If the housing system is not suitable, it causes poor animal welfare and the consequences are anomalous behaviour, stress, higher mortality, and morbidity, usually also impaired productivity. The animal welfare indicators are interacted and mutually bound. Therefore a complex consideration of them all gives a better estimation of animal welfare. Such complex consideration gives us the opportunity not only to understand the ethological statements for the animal welfare improvement, but it also assures ethical, as well as successful animal production.
