Sulphur is one of the essential, irreplaceable nutrients of agricultural plants; it is a mobile element, and in environment it is liable to very significant changes because of the variety of its chemical forms. It is a component of vital metabolic compounds. The content of sulphur in soil varies between 0.01% and 1%. Organic compounds are dominant and often form 90% of total amount of the sulphur in soil. Disulphates as inorganic compounds form about 5%, and elementary sulphur and disulphides form less than 3%. The proportion between the content of organic and inorganic sulphur is changeable and depends mainly on the type of soil, class of soil, and depth of the intake of the sample. One of the limiting factors for vegetal production is the deficit of sulphur. The environment protection and ecological measures oriented to decreasing of the discharged sulphur compounds caused the decrease of the sulphur supply. The aim of our work was to determine selected fractions of sulphur, organic carbon, and the content of humus in soil samples. We compared the indicators of the different types of samples, which were taken from different depths from the soils in the Tokay region (Makovisko, Káty - Čelejka) in the year 2006. The obtained results gave us the base for the characterisation of the soil conditions in this area.
