Traditional baby corn production uses fertile baby corn varieties which required the removal of tassels or detasseling for earlier harvest, higher yield, and prevention of pollination. However, it results in higher cost, time-consuming and perhaps in yield loss affected by some leaf loss. Thus the Sweet Corn and Baby Corn Improvement Project of Kasetsart University is targeting to develop baby corn inbreds for producing non-detasseled baby corn single crosses for the fresh market and processing. The non-detasseled baby corn single cross, KBSC 605, was developed from the baby corn inbred Ki 28 cms crossed with PACB 421-S sub (14)-223. The Cooperative Baby Corn Hybrid Trial was conducted in the 2005 early and late rainy seasons at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Pakchong district, Nakhonratchasima province. The result showed that KBSC 605 gave unhusked ear weight of 6,556 kg/ha, husked ear weight of 1,175 kg/ha, good ear weight of 1,025 kg/ha, poor ear weight of 150 kg/ha, number of good ear weight of 26,052 ears/ha (90.61 percent) and number of poor ear weight of 2,701 ears/ha (9.39 percent) different from those of G-5414 by -10.72, 14.63, 22.39, ย20.00, 9.80 and -43.97 percent, respectively. It possessed unhusked to husked ear weight ratio of 5.65 which was higher than that of G-5414 (7.19). Moreover, it had 1.77 ears/plant, yellow ear with sharp tip, first harvesting date of 49.5 days, plant and ear heights of 190 and 104 cm, respectively. It showed resistance to root lodging and leaf diseases and high fresh plant weight of 40,600 kg/ha. KBSC 605 is released to the processing plant in 2007.
