Organic carbon (OC) sinks in lake sediments about 50 percent of marine sediments, in spite of the small areal extent of lakes. A significant contribution to the carbon and methane cycle was revealed in a small hydro-electric reservoir, role of sedimentation and remineralisation on OC burial in sediments from Lake Wohlen, located in Central Switzerland, was investigated through important triggering factors: sedimentation rates, oxygen exposure time (OET), CH4 fluxes and carbon fluxes. Due to the small variation in OC content (range 1-2 percent OC), rapid sedimentation rates (5-11 cm/yr) had the strongest effect on OC accumulation in the reservoir sediments, and thus resulted in extreme OC burial rates (700-2,000 gC/square m/yr). Oxygen exposure times (OET) in Lake Wohlen were very short (range 4-50 days). Conclusion on the roles of OET on carbon preservation within the reservoir can not be drawn. However, the present results from Lake Wohlen support the negative correlation between OC burial efficiency and OET from marine and lake sediments. Hence, carbon burial efficiencies in Lake Wohlen were extremely high (85-92 percent) compared to other lake and marine sediments.
