Objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate S3 lines by testcrossing with inbred tester and 2) to select the superior S3 lines to form the new cycle of KSC2(HI)C3. The 193 superior S3 lines of the shrunken-2 sweet corn population KSC2(HI)C2-F2 were selected and testcrossed with the SSWI 114 inbred tester. The 193 testcrosses and 3 check hybrids (i.e., Hi-brix3, Sugar75 and KSSC604) were tested in a 14*14 simple lattice at the National Corn and Sorghum Research Center in the 2008 early rainy season. Results showed that the 25 best testcrosses produced mean fresh yields, eating quality and most of agronomic traits higher than those of the overall means of the 193 testcrosses. The means of green weight, yellow weight and good weight of the 25 best testcrosses were 18,269, 12,013 and 11,869 kg/ha, respectively. Their mean yields were higher than those of the 193 testcrosses by 12.03, 14.13 and 14.86 percent, respectively. The 10 best testcrosses had lower means of green weight, yellow weight and good weight than those of the means of check hybrids by -2.90 -4.82 and -0.51 percent, respectively. From the results, the 25 S3 lines of the best testcrosses were recombined for the formation of the cycle 3 (KSC2(HI)C3). The promising S3 lines were further developed into inbred lines to produce single-cross hybrids for the fresh market and processing.
