Many varieties have been created around the world combining in their genome some enhanced biological, morphological, chemical-technological and gustatory features. Not all of them however could adapt and manifest their features in countries and areas with soils and climatic conditions different from those present where these varieties were created. In the last few years in order to meet the growing demand for tobacco of the Basmi variety group tobacco growers in some areas of our country turned to Greek varieties. This called for the present research to be conducted with the aim of making a chemical and technological assessment of tobacco varieties of Greek origin grown here. The research focuses on the Zihna and Komotini varieties with Dzhebel K 81 harvest 2006 serving as a reference point. The tobacco varieties were tested for the following features: chemical composition of tobacco and tobacco smoke, spectral-photometric assessment, expert assessment and tasting. The complex assessment included the most characteristic features of these varieties. Grading on the basis of the quality index which was obtained proves that Zihna lags behind the reference variety Dzhebel K 81. An overall higher quality of Zihna from the Dzhebel area was ascertained, as well as uniformity in the occurrence of Komotini and Zihna from Nevrokop.
