Urine and dung of dairy cattle have been applied for two years on a sward composed mainly of perennial ryegrass. This first paper deals with the effect of urine and dung applications on the growth and nutrients content of the grass sward. Compared to the treatment without animal returns, urine applications quickly led to a sharp increase in the dry matter yield. Dung aplications had a much less pronounced, later and more sustainable effect than urine applications. The latter led to a marked increase in nitrogen and potassium content of the sward while dung applications had a slight positive effect on nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents. Inmany treatments, the total amount of nutrients applied to the sward was far more important than the quantity exported by the harvested grasses. The effect of these nutrients surplus on the loss of nutrients by leaching will be analyzed in a second paper.
