The cool and damp weather during summer 2007 in Switzerland induced strong incidence of pre-harvest sprouting. Around 21% of the wheat harvest had too low bread making quality. Sproutedwheat is characterised by high activities of the starch degrading enzyme [alpha]-amylase. The standard method to determine the degree of pre-harvest sprouting is the falling number measure, an indirect way to appreciate [alpha]-amylase's activity. For cereal breeders, obtaining resistant cultivars to pre-harvest sprouting is difficult because of lack of cheap and easy screening tools. Based on different literature findings saying that hailstorms can lead to low falling numbers, this scientific work was conducted to evaluate the influences of distortions in carbohydrate sink-source relationships (such as damages by hail) on falling number and their eventual usability in cereal breeding. To disturb the sink-source relationships, three treatments were applied in different wheat and triticale trials. The results showed that the sink-source distortions had significant (p 0.05) influences on thousand kernel weight and falling number. Furthermore, it was observed that the results strongly depended on cultivar and environment. Therefore it came to the conclusion that implemented treatments are not usable as screening tool for cereal breeding.
