The PASTO project tested experimental agricultural practices in Herens cattle breed. Their acceptability by cattle breeders was assessed to check their chances of being implemented and under which conditions. Different existing practices in the central Valais were therefore analysed, as well as the underlying value system and representations. Different types of breeders were identified according to the importance they give to fighting cows («combats de Reine») competition and to economic objectives in farming activity. Participation to competitions implies specific practices not compatible with the tested practices in the project. Breeders most susceptible to adopt these new practices are professional ones whith main objectives of economic returns.
