Stilbene phytoalexins are identified as defence response in pathogen-grapevine interactions, but little information is available on the role of stilbenes against Erysiphe necator, causal agent of grapevine powdery mildew. Analysis and quantification of stilbenes in artificially infected leaf discs from susceptible (Vitis vinifera cv. Chasselas) to highly resistant cultivars (IRAC 2292, Vitis candicans) were performed and compared to the development of the pathogen. Results indicate that stilbene amounts, especially viniferins, expressed by infection site, allow discriminating susceptible and resistant cultivars. Highest viniferins concentrations are measured already two days after inoculation in resistant cultivars, corresponding with the observed inhibition of the pathogen growth. The analysis of stilbenes at the infection site and viniferins accumulation in grapevine defence reaction are discussed in relation to the development of resistance markers for powdery mildew resistance and early selection of grape seedlings.
