Health and recreation in forest and landscape - a retrospective
2010
Bauer, N., Eidgenoessische Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft WSL, Birmensdorf (Switzerland)
Taking the great diversity of lectures given at the Health and recreation in forest and landscape Conference held in Birmensdorf from 1st to 3rd April 2009, the present article brings them into an approximate classification and shows new fields of action or suggests those which should be gone into more thoroughly. The research projects presented can be divided into those studies which analyse the effects of certain environmental conditions on people and those in which demographic data or data from surveys are linked to spatial information. The practical examples presented are connected either with people or with the physical environment. The majority of research projects deal with forest and landscape as a resource for physical and mental well-being. Studies on the effects of a stay in natural surroundings on social health are however, as always, relatively rare. This branch of research deserves more attention in the future. Furthermore, by means of carefully controlled empirical studies, research should be made into which environment is most suitable for which target group and at what moment in time. In addition, it would be important to gather the experiences gained by the numerous individual studies in a central data bank in order to make this knowledge generally accessible and to facilitate cooperation between all sectors.
