The results of studies on the root activity and root characters of sixteen maize varieties showed that the root activity of newborn and 30d after silking was positively correlated with the yield. The high-yield maize varieties had higher root activity than that of low-yield and it declined slowly. The number of root layer between maize varieties was almost same, but the number of aerial root was difference and it was positively correlated with the yield.
