A NOTE ON THE EFFECTS OF A TREATMENT WITH IRON DEXTRAN ON THE GROWTH OF LACTATING PELON MEXICANO PIGLETS | NOTA SOBRE EL EFECTO DEL TRATAMIENTO CON HIERRO-DEXTRANA EN EL CRECIMIENTO DE CERDITOS PELON MEXICANO LACTANTES

Se evaluó el efecto de inyectar o no hierro-dextrana a 95 cerditos Pelón Mexicano lactantes en el crecimiento y la mortalidad de animales procedentes de 15 camadas divididas a la mitad entre cerditos a los que se suministró o no 100 mg de hierro-dextrana en los días primero y 21 de vida. El peso promedio de los animales con un día de vida fue 0.837 kg. La lactancia de los cerditos ocurrió mientras se criaban sobre piso de tierra al aire libre. Los datos se analizaron según un modelo lineal que tuvo en cuenta el bloque (cada cerda) y el sexo. No hubo efecto significativo (P0.05) del bloque o el sexo en los índices medidos. No hubo efecto de tratamiento (P0.05) en el peso vivo de los animales a los 21 y 42 días (2.25 y 2.34; 3.35 y 3.27 kg respectivamente) ni en la mortalidad, que fue 17.8 y 22.0% respectivamente para animales con hierro-dextrana o no. El sexo tampoco tuvo influencia significativa (P0.05) en la influencia en la velocidad de crecimiento, que fue lineal (R2, 0.989; P0.001). La aplicaciónde hierro-dextrana en lechones Pelón Mexicano lactantes no influyó en el crecimiento de los mismos quizás por el hecho de haber sido criados en sistemas semiextensivos con acceso al suelo. Pudiera sugerirse el revisar el status del metabolismo del hierro en cerditos Pelón Mexicano en condiciones que no sean las descritas en la presente evaluación.

An evaluation was made of the effect of injection or not of iron dextran to 95 Pelón Mexicano lactating piglets, on growth rate and mortality of animals from 15 litters divided into piglets treated or not with100 mg of dextran iron when the animals were either one- or 21- days old. Average body weight of one-day old piglets was 0.837 kg. Lactating piglets were reared outdoors under soil. The data were subjected to a model taking into account block (every sow) and sex. There was no significant effect (P0.05) of block on the measured indices. There was no significant effect (P0.05) neither on animal live weight at 21 and 42 days of age (2.25 and 2.34; 3.35 and 3.27 kg respectively) nor on mortality, which accounted for 17.8 and 22.0% respectively for animals treated or not with iron dextran. Sex was with no significant influence (P0.05) on growth rate which conducted in a linear manner (R2, 0.989; P0.001). Iron dextran treatment had no influence on growth of Pelón Mexicano piglets, probably due to the fact that the animals were reared in semi-extensive systems with access to soil. It could be suggested to examine the status of iron metabolism in Pelón Mexicano piglets in those conditions dissimilar to those described in the current evaluation.
