Two sugar beet cultivars, Takt and Compass, were used in small plot trials established during the years 2002-2004 in order to evaluate the effects of standard and intensive growing technologies on energy balance of the growing process. Our results show that the energy content of the main product (root) ranged from 758.91 GJ/ha/year (Compass, intensive technology, 2003) to 1,784.12 GJ/ha/year (Takt, intensive technology, 2002). Specific energy consumption for the main product ranged from 0.028 (Takt, intensive technology, 2002) to 0.066 (Compass, intensive technology, 2003). Energetic efficiency ranged from 21.71 units (Takt, standard technology, 2003) to 50.11 units (Takt, intensive technology, 2002). In conclusion, the intensive technology seems to be energetically more effective.
