The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects that betaine (BET) and CLA on apparent fecal digestibility of fat and individual fatty acids of Iberian growing pigs (20-50 kg BW). Gilts (n=20) were fed control, 1% CLA, 0.5% BET or 1% CLA+0.5% BET isoenergetic diets at 95% of ad libitum intake. Feed intake was adjusted weekly according to BW. At 30 kg BW, a balance experiment was conducted where a 4 days total excreta collection was performed. Aliquots of faeces and diets were frozen at -20 deg C until further analysis. Fatty acids were extracted, methylated and analyzed by gas chromatography. Betaine addition decreased apparent total tract digestibility of palmitic, estearic and linoleic acids with no effect on total fat, CLA or oleic acid. Dietary CLA decreased apparent fecal digestibility of total fat, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids and increased 9c-11t CLA. Similar effects were found when CLA+BET were added except that only a trend towards decreased palmitic and linolenic acid apparent fecal digestibilties were found. Betaine and CLA decreased apparent fecal digestibility of most individual fatty acids in growing Iberian pigs.
