An experiment was conducted at Adet Research centre in Ethiopia for two consecutive years (1990-91) to investigate the effects on N and P fertilizers on the yield and nodulation pattern of faba bean. The design used was randomized complete block with four replications. The treatments included four levels of N (0, 23, 46 and 120 kg N ha-1 and two levels of P (0 and 20 kg P ha-1 as triple super phosphate). Results revealed that there were significant differences among the treatments for dry matter and grain yields both 1990 and 1991. In both years, maximum dry matter and grain yields of faba bean were obtained with the application of 46 kg N ha-1 and 20 kg P ha-1. The higher number of nodules per plant were recoded when faba bean was fertilized with both N and P fertilizers even though there was no significant difference. Nodulation was not suppressed due to higher rate fertilizer application. Based on the results obtained, it can be recommended that further study on the inoculation needs of faba bean with appropriate rhizobium strain is necessary under Adet Nitosol conditions since the yield response of faba bean to fertilizer application was significant.
