During the winter season of 1997-98 an experiment was conducted at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, with the objective of investigating the effect of microbial fertilizers on growth and yield of onion. Eighteen treatments consisting of two bio-inoculants (Azospirillum brasilense Str Cd and Gigaspora calospora), nitrogebous (urea) and phosphatic (single superphosphate) fertilizers and their different combinations were compared under field condition in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data were collected on nitrogen fixation, yield and yield attributes and nutrient uptake of onion. Application of microbials proved to be advantageous in improving the bulb weight, bulb size, bulb yield and nutrient uptake of onion. However, it did not have appreciable influence on nitrogen fixation, neck thickness, root disc diameter and bulb number. Generally, the experiment has suggested that by co-inoculating A. brasilense and G. calospora there is a considerable scope for dectreasing the need for chemical nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilizer to a considerable extent without any loss in the growth and yield of onion.
