The effects of seven concentrations of ethrel and a saturated solution of calcium carbide with tap water as control were investigated for their comparative effectiveness in inducing flowering in the Smooth Cayenne pineapple over a 12-week period. Ethrel concentrations ranged from 200 to 2000 ppm. All concentrations except the 200 ppm ethrel gave significantly higher percent flowering, from 7 to 10 weeks, than the calcium carbide. Maximum flowering (99 per cent) occurred at 10 weeks. The lowest effective dose of ethrel for maximum flowering was the 400 ppm. Treatments also significantly raised the percent acidity in the juice over the control but had no effect on percent total soluble solids. The 400 ppm ethrel is recommended for floral induction and raising acidity in the Smooth Cayenne pineapple.
