The study was undertaken to determine the effects of mechanical stress and effective soil depth on buttressing of Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum, and the apparent relationship between buttressing and upper bole fluting. Data on buttresses from 191 Triplochiton 0_48-0_61 m in diameter were analysed with reference to direction of tree lean and asymmetrical crown to determine effects of mechanical stress. Soil-buttress relationships were studied under 20 trees and site-buttress relationships were measured on an additional 22 trees.
