Demand elasticities for Nigeria's groundnut oilseed exports.

For over two decades, the Nigerian governments have focused attention on groundnut research with a view to increasing yields. These efforts have yielded results by creating suitable opportunities for expanding groundnut output in northern Nigeria. In the light of this, a study of demand behavior in the traditional markets for Nigerian groundnuts is undertaken by developing the relevant demand, price and income relationships. The hypothesis is that demand for groundnuts on the world markets is a function of its price and per capita consumer income. The empirical result shows that both of these variables do influence demand and that groundnut demand is mostly price elastic. The negative signs expected on all the coefficients of the price variable are obtained. The R' ranged from 0'55 to 0_81 indicating that a 'reasonable' proportion of the variations in demand is explained. The coefficients of all variables (price and income) are statistically significant at either P = 0_01 or P = 0_05.
