The effects of inoculating roots of virus-infected cocoa seedlings with Phytophthora palmivora (Butl.) Butl. were investigated in a series of pot experiments. Isolates of the cocoa swollen shoot virus and cocoa mottle leaf virus were used. With all the virus isolates, plants infected with both virus and the fungus had significantly fewer leaves with smaller leaf areas and, also, had shorter stems and weighed less than non-infected control plants.
