The effects of six pre-sowing treatments on germination of Flemingia macrophylla

Laboratory and green house experiments were conducted to study the effects of six pre-sowing treatments on germination of Flemingia macrophyl/a seeds. The best results were, obtained when seeds were immersed in concentrated sulphuric acid for 6 min before sowing and when they were mechanically scarified with sand paper. A fairly good germination was obtained when seeds were soaked in cold water for 3 days before sowing. Percentage germination was low when seeds were not treated, were immersed in hot water at 90 ·C for I min, or soaked in cold water for 6 days before seeding. Germination was higher in the laboratory than in the green house. The results obtained in the green house study might be a better indication of the results that would be obtained under field conditions. Mechanical and acid scarification and 3-day soaking in cold water treatments are recommended for use by farmers. If a suitable scarifier is manufactured, mechanical scarification will be the most suitable treatment for adoption by farmers.
