Preliminary studies on supplemental feeding of cattle reared under essentially"local"conditions in Northern Ghana

A highly significant improvement in weight gains was obtained in N'dama and Fulani heifers fed ad lib. a 30% urea in salt mixture in their kraal from 4 p.m. until 8 a.m. during the dry season. Estimated cost per head of feeding this mixture throughout the dry season was 17/5. Improved growth, but without statistical significance was obtained from feeding at 10%urea, protein, mineral, vitamin block to N'dama and Fulani heifers during the 'dry season. There was a significant effect in March, prior to the rains and resultant improved grazing, indicating the non-supplemented animals recovered from protein deprivation and made better use of the flush of pasture. Based on limited observations the addition of the flavour Sessalom offers p3ssibilities for increasing urea consumption to more than the 20 g/head/day obtained in this study.
