A method of extracting phenolase from cocoa leaves is described. Some properties of the enzyme have been studied. The phenolase activity of cocoa leaves infected with swollen shoot virus is generally greater than that of healthy leaves. The enzyme is strongly inhibited by low concentration of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DIECA) but is less sensitive to sodium azide. The inhibition by DmCA is competitive whereas that by sodium azide is not. The inhibition by DIECA can be partially reversed by incubation with small amounts of CuSOt.The use of OmCA as phenolase inhibitor in cocoa virus extraction is discussed.
