This paper deals with studies in genetic variation in morphological and physiological characters, namely, floral initiation and opening, maturity and yield during the main (March to July) and the minor rainy reasons (August to November) of 11 local varieties of Solanum intergrifolium and 6 exotic (S. melongena) varieties of egg plants which were grown at the Kwadaso Central Agricultural Station on March 11, 1967. Results reveal the existence of genetic variation in all the characters which were studied. Morphologically the exotic varieties could be distinguished from the local varieties by the fact that they produce much larger fruits, with mature unripe fruit colours of pink, green and grey. Highly significant differences were also established between the exotic and the local varieties on fruit number and mean fruit weight during the two seasons. Yield during t~e minor season was not encouraging especially when the extra cost of maintaining the plants is considered. Floral initiation and opening were all positively correlated with maturity. Fruit number during the two seasons were negatively correlated with the mean fruit weight.
