Rehabilitation of pistachio forests through exclusion and using natural and artificial regeneration practices.

To study the rehabilitation of wild pistachio(Pistacia atlantica) forests, a research project was carried out using a randomized block design with four replication. The treatments were exclusion area, seed sowing, seedling planting and control. The total area of the research site was 4 ha. The project continued for 5 years in the wild pistachio research forest site in Firouzabad, Fars province. The results showed that all plants from seed sowing plots failed to grow due to the severe summer drought. The seedling planting plots were completely destroyed as well because of overgrazing of rodents and animals. Also there were no significant differences between control and preserved treatments in terms of the ground cover and the generation ratio of wild pistachio (ل = 0.05%). A high correlation between the number of shrubs of bitter almond species (Amygdalus scoparia, A. eburnea and A. lycioides) and the regeneration ratio of pistachio was observed (R² = 0.75.5%). Therefore, the best method for management in these forests is to plant shrubs such as Amygdalus scoparia, A. eburnea and A. lycioides accompanied with the encouragement of traditional husbandry systems which are more close to the nature.
