Study of morphometry of field bindweed (Convolvulus arnensis L.) populations in Tehran.

Field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) is one of important weeds in the world. This weed with extent root system, regrowth ability, production of dormant seed with long viability, can easily establish in different ecosystems. Herbicide resistant in biotypes of field bindweed makes difficult its control. Study of morphologic characters and morphometry for classifying biotypes is important. Therefore, in this study, evaluation of quantitative and qualitative variables of field bindweed populations was done in Tehran province. The variables were flower color and its arrange, diameter and height of flower, stigma and anther height, stigma to anther ratio, and number of fruits in each plant, seed number in fruit, total number of seed in each plant was recorded. Flower color was studied qualitative and quantitative using spectrophotometry. The data was analsyed using correlation coefficients and cluster analysis. Based on recorded variables analysis, 3 and 6 groups had the most members in fieldbindweed populations of Tehran province. Two completly independent biotypes in Karaj and Varamin, show specific biotype in the region or resistance to agricultural practices, specially herbicides. In correlation coefficients analysis, significant correlation was observed between the variables. A negative correlation was observed between the increase in flower color and seed infection that is probably due to biochemical differences between the biotypes.
