Evaluation of tillage and Nitrogen effects on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) yield as double-crop fallowing wheat.

A survey was carried out during 2006 and 2007 in the north of Iran (Hashem Abad Agric. Res. Station, Gorgan, Golestan province) to study double-cropped cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) following wheat response to tillage and N fertilizer application and their interaction. This investigation was arranged in one strip block design with 2 factors (tillage and Nitrogen rate) in three replications. The tillage (horizontal factor) levels was: conventional tillage (CT), strip tillage (ST) and tillage after wheat stubble burning (CTW), and N rate levels (vertical factor) were 0, 87.5, 175 and 262.5 kg ha-1 that was considered as %0, %50, %100 and %150 Nitrogen recommended rate. Results showed that tillage and N application had effect on lint yield in first year but no significant difference was seen in second year on any measured variable as well as yield. Combined analysis of data has showed that 20 bolls weight in ST was higher that CT, meanwhile ST did not have significant difference with CTW. There was a significant difference in two factors interaction on lint yield. Lint yield were affected by differrent N rate. The lowest amounts of lint yield and boll number was produced under 0 kg/ha N. These results indicated that cotton could be produced effectively in ST with 50% Nitrogen recommended rate application after wheat.
