Identification,Evaluation and storing seed of medicinal plants in order to Gene Bank Development.

In order to development of natural resource gene bank a research project for collection, identification, evaluation and seed storing of medicinal plants were carried out in Agricultural research center of Qom province, Iran, from 2002 to 2007. At first stage, the province was divided into four zones (steppe, semi steppe and arid and semi arid zone). Medicinal plant species were listed for each region and the valuable species were recognized. According to published literature, some sites that had good plant diversity were selected. Seeds were collected and their herbarium samples were prepared. Seeds were cleaned and their site information were registered in special form and finally they were stored in Natural resource Gene bank, Research institute of forests and rangelands. According to the our results 245 accessions were collected. They were belong to 18 family ,38 genus and 43 species. The highest accessions number were collected from Semi steppe, steppe and semi arid zones with average values of 139, 38 and 23 accessions, respectively. The result showed that families of Labiatae, Compositae, Hypericaceae, Umbelliferae and Liliaceae with 62, 60, 30, 26 and 13 had higher accessions number, respectively. The genus Hypericum (31 Acc.), Tanacetum(29 Acc.), Marrubium (24 Acc.), Thymus (18 Acc.), Achillea (16 Acc.) and Prangus (16 Acc.) had higher sample frequency. It was concluded that the best times for seed collection was from June to October according to plant phenological stages.
