Investigation of Breaking Dormancy of Ferula assa foetida.

Asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida L.) is a medicinal plant that its seed germination encountered with a big problem. Seeds of this plant have a long term dormancy. The present research was carried out to investigate the effect of hormonal compositions containing gibberellic acid (GA3), 6-furfurylaminutesopurine (Kinetin) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and chilling (0 and 28 days) on seed germination of this plant. The results showed that chilling causes to increase germination. Percentage of seed germination without chilling treatment was 37,5%, whereas in 28 days chilling was 82,86%. Germination was also affected by hormonal compositions. Hormones increased 23 germination from 53,3%in medium free of hormone to 74,4%in medium supplemented with 0,25 mg/l BAP. The highest (93,3%) and lowest (20%) germination was obtained from medium containing 0,25 mg/l BAP + 5 mg/l GA3 with 28 day chilling and medium with 0,1 mg/l Kinetin without chilling treatment, respectively.
