Avian coccidiosis caused by intracellular protozoan parasites belonging to several different species of Eimena. Currently the broiler industry relies upon prophylactic medication as its principle method of managing this disease. However,the inereasig incidence of drug- resistant eimerian parasites as well as the high economic costs involved in the producton of exsting ant-coccidial drugs and the search for new drugs have sparked an increased interest into the development of immunologically - based controls. Vaccination against coccidiosis holds considerable appeal as it provides a natural, cost-effective approach to disease control, free from the prolems of drug resistance and potentially toxic effects and residues. The avallability of prococious arrenuated strains with much reduced pathogenicity provides new opportunities for vaccines, but their successful application will depend on the development of user-friendly and effective delivery system if they are to compete with anticoccidial drugs. According to our present day knowiedge, anticoccidial vaccines in Iran need to immunise against four main pathogenic Eimeria, namely, E. acervlina, E.maxima, E. necatrix and E.tenella. This project resulted in isolation and purification of three major species of avian coccidia E. maxima was isolated and partially purified by selection and the usage of birds immune against remaining six species. E.necatrix and E. tenella were isolated by collection of fourth generation merozoite and inoculation, via rectal routs, and development of oocysts in caecal tissues.This is the first report on isolation and purification of chicken eimerian in Iran.
