Addition of salmon egg oil extracts to sperm dilution improves the survival rate of frozen-thawed pig sperm

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of salmon egg oil supplementation to pig sperm dilutions for cryopreservation on motility, survival rate, membrane integrity, and developmental competence following in vitro fertilization. Salmon egg oil was extracted from fresh salmon eggs and added at a concentration of 1, and 3% to the sperm dilution for cryopreservation. The addition of 1% salmon egg oil significantly improved the sperm survival rate when the sperm dilution was cooled to 5degC and when the frozen sperm dilution was thawed. When the frozen thawed sperm were used for in vitro fertilization, addition of 1% salmon egg oil extracts to sperm dilution did not affect the rate of fertilization, however, improved the rate of development to the blastocyst stage. Furthermore, salmon egg oil without egg yolk added to the dilution also improved the sperm survival rate in sperm dilution cooled to 5degC. In conclusion, supplementation of oil extracted from salmon eggs enhances sperm survival rate under condition of cooling and freezing.
