Inhibitive effect of rice bran treatment of soil surface on paddy-field weeds

Rice bran treatment of soil surface was performed to clarify inhibitive effect on paddy-field weeds as well as effect on rice seedling survival by the treatment. Seedlings were transplanted the day after soil puddling, and the soil surface was treated with rice bran granulated through the refining process of wash-free rice two days after the soil puddling. As results, oxidation-reduction potential after the rice bran treatment of the soil surface was reduced more immediately when the amount of the bran used for the treatment was higher, and only few weeds except Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides remained in the rice-bran treated fields. It is presumed that M. vaginalis and S. juncoides remained because germination of these weeds was not inhibited regardless of highly reduced soil condition caused by the rice bran treatment of soil surface. Furthermore, both the number of root clumps and fresh weight of M. vaginalis were reduced depending on the amount of the bran used for the treatment. In S. juncoides, meanwhile, fresh weight per individual plant was reduced, but reduction of the number of root clumps was not confirmed. It is presumed because extent of inhibition of germination and rooting in S. juncoides by the rice bran treatment of soil surface was smaller than that of M. vaginalis. In addition, substantial paddy rice of older foliar age was able to avoid poor survival caused by the treatment, because of high adaptability against highly reduced soil condition resulted by the treatment.
