Larval and juvenile fishes collected at sandy beaches of upper Hiroshima Bay, Seto [Japan] Inland Sea

A total of 2,137 fishes belonging to 28 or more species in 19 families were collected by monthly seine surveys at 11 sandy beaches of northern Hiroshima Bay, the western Seto Inland Sea, Japan, from Oct. 2006 to Sep. 2007. The mean water temperature and salinity at the 11 stations ranged between 12.1(Feb.) and 28.9degC (Sep.) and between 21.8 (Sep.) and 29.7 (Jul.), respectively. Mean fish abundance fluctuated by 48-folds from 1.4/tow (Jan. and Sep.) to 67.8/tow (Jun.). Total number of fish species ranged between 3 (Apr.) and 13 (Jul.) and mean number of fish species between 0.4/tow (Jan.) and 2.9/tow (Jul.). The 10 most dominant fish species (% in number) were Acanthopagrus schlegelii (30.3%), Gymnogobius breunigii (28.5%), Hypoatherina valenciennei (13.2%), Takifugu niphobles (7.2%), Acanthopagrus latus (5.9%), Lateolabrax japonicus (5.2%), Chelon affinis (2.9%), Gymnogobius heptacanthus (1.3%), Favonigobius gymnauchen (0.9%) and Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis (0.5%). The ichthyofauna of the sandy beaches of Hiroshima Bay was characterized by the large fluctuation in number of species and abundance of larval and juvenile fishes among seasons as previously reported in other sandy beaches in the Seto Inland Sea (Osaka Bay and Sea of Hiuchi).
