Combustibility of wood heated with a low heat flux

The combustibility of 49 kinds of wood was evaluated by cone calorimeter tests with a heat flux of 14 kW/square m and compared with the results when tested with a heat flux of 50 kW/square m. The influence of the permeability of wood on combustibility was also investigated. When wood specimens were heated with a heat flux of 14 kW/square m, a correlation between the time to ignition and the density of wood specimen was not observed, whereas a fairly close correlation was observed in the test with a heat flux of 50 kW/square m. However, regarding permeability, the specimen tended to ignite later with lower permeability. The peak heat release rate of the wood specimen was correlated with the wood density but the correlation coefficient became higher when the permeability was added to the parameter. The test results confirmed that the permeability affects whether the flames die-out when wood-based beams and columns are subjected to the fireproof performance test.
