Influence of medium pruning after pluching the first tea crop on first-crop yield and yield components in the following year

The influence of medium pruning carried out after plucking the first tea crop on first-crop yield and yield components in the following year were elucidated. 1. Tea trees grown in each kind of soil were pruned to 50 cm above ground level, and the yield and yield components of the first tea crop in the following year were examined. Yield was slightly reduced by medium pruning, while the number of plucked new shoots was reduced and the weight of 100 new shoots was slightly increased. These effects of medium pruning were seen for all kind of soil. 2. Tea cultivars were pruned to 60 cm above ground level, and the yield and yield components of the first tea crop in the following year were examined. Medium pruning induced an increase in yield and in weight of 100 new shoots of the first tea crop in the following year in all cultivars, while the number of plucked new shoots was decreased. 3. Taken together, the influence of medium pruning on yield and yield components of the first tea crop in the following year varied depending on the degree of medium pruning. Medium pruning after plucking the first crop generally caused a decrease in the number of plucked new shoots and an increase in the weight of 100 new shoots of the first tea crop in the following year, suggesting that medium pruning accelerates the growth of new shoots.
