In modern England, capitalist farming has developed under the three-fold division of agricultural interests: landlords, capitalist farmers and laborers. The development of English farming is unique in modern world history. The purpose of this paper is to examine the origins of capitalist farmers in England. In the Middle Ages a fixed payment in lieu of varying receipts or profits was known as a 'ferm'. In the 14th century some bailiffs took lords' demesne on 'land and stock lease'. The term 'farmer' meant a person who had taken on lease a demesne in the 15th or 16th century. We can find the historical origin of capitalist farmers in the bailiffs who were agents of the landlords.
