Manufacture and properties of plywood from oil palm [Elaeis guineensis]

Plywoods were manufactured from rotary veneer of oil palm trunk. The powder which was made from oil palm trunk, bark, frond and leaf were used as a binder for the plywoods. The influence of the grain size and raw material of powder, and the density of veneer on the adhesive shear strength and wood failure of the plywoods were investigated. The results were as follows: the highest adhesive shear strength and wood failure were obtained from the plywoods composed of oil palm veneers with density of 0.3 - 0.5 g/cubic cm and oil palm trunk or frond powder with grain size of 10microm. However, the adhesive shear strength and wood failure of these plywoods were inferior to that of the plywoods with urea formaldehyde adhesive or phenol formaldehyde adhesive.
