The Seafood distribution system is largely divided by three types : the landing distribution, the retail distribution, and the wholesale distribution in consuming area. However, due to change in recent seafood supply structure, growth of large scale discount store oriented distribution structure, and expansion of off board market, changes of several structures are generating in the seafood distribution system. In particular, changes of relationship among three distributions, like sudden growth in retail distribution in opposition to decline in the landing and the wholesale distributions, have led structural changes in the distribution system. These changes have been accelerated by Japanese economic slump and seafood market's standstill started from the early of 1990s. This paper addresses the landing distribution and the wholesale distribution in consuming area with the distribution system based on the second stage wholesale market. In addition, this paper provides problems of the wholesale markets and also suggests future tasks for overcoming the decline in function of the wholesale market system.
