Canine malignant mammary gland tumors with concurrent occurrence of other tumors

Histological evaluation of 15 malignant mammary gland tumors in dogs was performed on focusing its classification, grading and occurrence of unusual cases. All known mammary gland carcinomas including noninfiltrating (in Situ) [1 case], complex [3], tubulopapillary [5], solid [2], cribriform [1], anaplastic [2] carcinomas were diagnosed in this study. Since these tumors exhibited variable combination of tumor patterns, diagnosis was determined with the most predominant pattern. Interestingly, a case diagnosed as complex carcinoma had a concurrent occurrence of lipoma around the tumor lesions. Moreover, this case showed multiple formations of well-differentiated bone and bone marrow in the lesions. One case diagnosed as tubulopapillary carcinoma had a concurrent sebaceous adenoma around the tumor lesions. There was one osteosarcoma case which revealed variable sizes of osteoid formation and neoplastic osteoblasts. Carcinoma lesions could be graded between Ⅰ to Ⅲ. According to this grading system, it was graded as Ⅲ with two cases diagnosed as anaplastic carcinoma. Among them, one cased died and investigated pathologically revealed metastasis to regional lymph node and lungs. Noninfiltrating carcinoma was also graded as Ⅱ. One of two cases diagnosed as solid carcinoma was graded Ⅲ, whereas the other Ⅰ. The cases diagnosed as tubulopapillary and cribirform carcinomas had grade Ⅰ and Ⅱ malignancy. It is the first report about the concurrent occurrence of mammary gland carcinomas with the lipoma and sebaceous gland adenoma in dogs.
