Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus(RHDV) has caused severe economic losses in the Korean rabbit industry since an outback of RHD was reported in 1987. The safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of the commercial RHDV vaccine, which contains the recombinant VP60 protein, were evaluated. In the safety tests using mice, guinea pigs, and specific pathogen-free rabbits were inoculated with the commercial vaccine. There were no adverse effects at 7 or 14 days post-inoculation. To assess the immunogenicity of the commercial vaccine, guinea pigs injected with a single dose on two occasions with 2-week interval showed high hemagglutination inhibition(HI) antibody titers. To evaluate vaccine efficacy, two groups of rabbits were immunized with one vaccine dose each, and one group each was challenged subsequently with a lethal dosage of RHDVa(KV0801 isolate) or the original RHDV(RHF89 isolate). All of the immunized rabbits exhibited complete protection against the lethal dosage of RHDVa or RHDV and showed high HI antibody titers post-challenge. Our results indicate that the commercial RHDV vaccine is safe and induces protective immunity in rabbits.
