Effect of period feeding diet including breadcrumbs on growing performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality in growing-finishing pigs

To clarify the timing to start feeding diet including breadcrumbs, feeding trial was conducted from growing to finishing period in pigs. Forty eight LWxD crossbred pigs weighing approximately 50kg were divided into four groups and fed one of the two diets as follows. As a control diet, corn-soybean meal based diet met all the macro and micro nutrient requirement was used. As an experimental diet, 45% of the control diet was replaced with breadcrumbs and micro nutrients (except lysine) were added to meet the requirements. Pigs in control group and 50kg group were fed control diet and experimental diet, respectively, throughout the trial. Pigs in 70kg group and 90kg group were started with control diet and changed diet to experimental diet at the point that body weight reached to 70kg and 90kg, respectively. All the pigs were slaughtered at 110kg of body weight and carcass characteristics and meat quality were examined. 1. No significant difference was observed in growing performance. 2. Dressing percentages in pigs fed experimental diet were higher than pigs in control group (P0.05). Linear increase in backfat thickness as the period feeding experimental diet get longer resulted in lower carcass grading. 3. Intramuscular fat content in longissimus dorsi muscle significantly increased with the period feeding breadcrumbs lengthened. Sufficient improvement in meat quality examined by sensory evaluation was obtained in meat from pigs in 70kg group. According to overall evaluation, the highest advantage can be expected when pigs were started feeding breadcrumbs at 70kg of body weight.
