Analysis of formative factors of sound material-cycle blocks in relation to industrial waste and waste PET bottles

A new concept introduced in the second phase of the Basic Plan for Establishing a Recycling-based Society in 2008 was the establishment of sound material cycle (SMC) blocks, by means of which a material cycle of optimal size was formed in accordance with the characteristics of the region and the properties of its circulative resources. Although the implementation of SMC blocks aims to increase the circulation rate of resources for the whole country by establishing SMC blocks for waste and other circulating resources, many issues must be addressed before its realization. To provide appropriate SMC blocks, this study has as it objectives the sorting of analogous waste and circulative resources into groups, and the establishment of a decision theory for the ultimate SMC blocks for the various groups. At the first stage, the present conditions for industrial waste and waste PET bottles were analyzed using transportation problems, based on a Gravity Model and Quantification Theory Type I. The results of this study showed that there was deviation between present conditions and optimized solutions for transportation, that transportation distance had a significant impact on transportation quantities, and also that distribution of original generation points and disposal facilities affected transportation distance.
