According to the experts' estimate a hectare of hemp is equal to 4 hectares of forest. Nowadays hemp has become very interesting as crop for biomass production. The aim of this study was to clarify the possible effects of some factors (N fertilizer rate, variety) on the plant height and carbon content in hemp biomass. The trial was arranged in Agricultural Science Centre in Latgale in 2008 and 2009. Two varieties were used in the experiment (the Latvian local hemp 'Pūriņi' and Polish variety 'Bialobrezskie') fertilized with three N fertilizer rates (0 – check without N, 60, and 100 kg haE-1 N). The carbon content was determined by Eltra CS– 2000 equipment. Plant height was affected by both investigated factors. The carbon content in hemp stems was found from 37.62 to 40.88, and it did not depend on N–fertilizer rate, but only on variety used and presence or removal of hemp fibre.
