In 2007 and 2008, field trials were established in the farm “Arāji” where five types of nitrogen fertilizers were used: ammonium nitrate, calcium–ammonium nitrate, urea, potassium nitrate and ammonium sulphate. More important yield increase was obtained using urea, when buckwheat seed yield reached 1.83 t haE-1 but straw – 3.87 t haE-1. Application of ammonium nitrate and urea had negative influence on lodging resistance; losses of seeds at the harvesting also increased. All kinds of nitrogen fertilizers showed positive impact on protein content in buckwheat seeds, but especially – urea and calcium–ammonium nitrate. The seedling vigour and the seedling's root growth decreased when urea was used.
