Great snipe population, habitat management and conservation aspects in Belarus: a review
2008
Mongin, E., National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Minsk (Belarus). Inst. of Zoology
The great snipe Gallinago media typically populates floodplain meadows and reach fens. The species has narrow habitat specialisation and its distribution is associated with these two types of habitats. The large-scale drainage activities resulted in substantial loss of fen mires and floodplain meadows. According to the official data, the area of floodplain meadows and fens in Belarus had been reduced by no less than by 50% over the past 40 years. The current breeding population of the great snipe in Belarus is estimated at 4600-6000 males. At the present time, the drainage and flood control have moderate but potentially increasing impact on the great snipe in Belarus. Although the great snipe is legally protected in Belarus, specific changes in farming practices may cause further decline of the species.
