Browsing percentage of deciduous woody plants and interaction between cervids and plants in forest lands | Kokaugu apkodumu reģistrēšanas nozīme briežu dzimtas dzīvnieku un augu mijiedarbības novērtēšanā meža teritorijās

A short review shows that cervids and other herbivores may promote or deter further foraging. The earliest and first effect caused by cervids is occurrence (percentage or index) of deciduous trees and shrubs accessible to animals with browsing signs originated during vegetative period and visible in autumn (September). That index could be useful for monitoring of vegetation changes over time in response to deer browsing and to manage deer populations and forest plantations. That index shows whether number of animals is too small, optimal or there in given conditions the overpopulation is observed. The threshold level of browsing percentage between compensatory growth and decompensation is when about a half of trees and shrubs has fresh browsing signs in autumn.
