Socio-economic factors influencing choice of crop combination in coconut-based agroforestry system in Makiling Forest Reserve [Philippines]

The study was conducted to determine the social and economic factors influencing farmer's choice of crop combination in coconut-based agroforestry system within the Makiling Forest Reserve. The data were gathered through the use of questionnaires. A total of 36 farmers were interviewed for the study, representing 37.5% of the total farmers within the Cabantoc Watershed. The social factors were analyzed using Chi-Square test to measure test of independence between two variables. The economic factors were evaluated using ANOVA and DMRT where differences exist. The social factors influencing the number of crops combined in the agroforestry farm were land tenure and skills in agroforestry. The economic variables that have significant mean difference among crop combinations were area cultivated, number of labor days utilized for crops, number of labor days utilized for livestock, cash farm income and total cash costs. Among the perennial crops planted, coconut gave the highest return for 2006 at PhP 30,448 per hectare while cacao, the lowest PhP 1,250. For the agricultural crops planted, green corn and black pepper gave the highest returns per hectare at PhP 52,250 and PhP 43,333, respectively while ampalaya get the lowest at PhP 7,500. Livestock gave low average net returns of only PhP 6,700 per year.
