Effects of moisture regime and nutrient source on grain and sugar yield of sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.)

This study evaluated the effects of moisture regime and nutrient source on crop growth grain and juice yield and sugar content of sweet sorghum. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted in Los Baños, Philippines from March through September 2008. An experiment with moist, medium, and dry moisture regimes resulted in significant differences in stem length, leaf number, photosynthesis rate, stalk and juice weight, and brix measured in the stem and juice. The moist water regime had increased plant growth, photosynthesis rate, and stalk and juice weight while dry water regime had increased brix in the stalk. There was no significant difference in juice brix among moisture regimes. Nutrient source in the field experiment included: inorganic at 60:40:40 NPK; carabao manure and rice straw at 7 t/ha and 0.5 t/ha, respectively; and control with no fertilizer applied. Inorganic fertilizer resulted in increased plant growth, stalk and juice yield, and theoretical ethanol yield compared to the organic fertilizer. Juice brix was not affected by nutrient source. Grain, juice, and estimated ethanol yields were 2.7 t/ha, 18.5 t/ha, and 436.9 l/ha, respectively, in plots where inorganic fertilizer was applied.
